Winton W. Pouncey, affectionately known as Bill, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on September 24, 2023 at the Philip Hulitar Center in Providence, RI. He was born on August 15, 1927 in Ruthven, Alabama, to the late Mace and Vera (Caine) Pouncey.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Frances (Pouncey) Iacobbo, with whom he shared a home; his grandchildren, Antonia Leong and her husband Adam of Mill Valley, CA and Nicholas Iacobbo and his fiance, Irene Santacruz of Providence, RI; and his great-grandchildren, Scout Brocklehurst and Kaia Leong. Bill also leaves behind his sister, Janel Powell of Fort Deposit, Alabama and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Bianca (Betty) Calcagni Pouncey and his second wife, Helen McCarthy Pouncey; his brothers, Dewey, Jamie and Frank Pouncey and his sisters, Lurlene Johnson and Unavey Pouncey.
Bill was a Navy man! He joined the Seabees in March of 1945. After 15 months, he transferred to the Navy Fleet Reserve, serving as an Electronics Technician on aircraft carriers. His Naval career allowed him to travel around the world multiple times. He served his country for 30 years and after being honorably discharged, he worked for the City of Providence, RI where he spent 22 years as Supervisor of the Department of Water Purification in Scituate, RI.
He enjoyed boating, fishing, clamming and he was an avid golfer, playing three times a week with a great group of guys. He was Board President and Dock Chairman of Briggs Farm Association for over 25 years. In his later years he would spend most of the winter months in Alabama. He loved to go back to his old home place in Friendship, near Greenville Alabama, and sit in his rocker on the front porch, taking it all in.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, September 28th at 11 am in St. Mary Star of the Sea, 864 Point Judith Rd, Narragansett, 02882. Burial to follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 S. County Trail, Exeter, 02822.
