Winifred Barber Helfrich, 92, of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2024 while at home with her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late John E. Helfrich for 63 years. Born on March 8, 1932 in Providence, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Howard C. and Winifred (Swarbrik) Barber.
Win graduated from Hope High School in 1949 and the University of Rhode Island in 1953 where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She proudly cared for her family and later in life worked in retail and bookkeeping. She was a champion of organization and helped her family through six inter-state moves as her husband was transferred across the country and back. Win loved to read and garden. She was a member of Kingston Congregational Church.
A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Win is survived by her two daughters, Winifred Helfrich Gay (Eben) of Burlington, Vermont and Holly Helfrich Washburn (Steve) of Wakefield, Rhode Island. She leaves behind four grandchildren; Robert Gay of Burlington, Vermont, Patricia Gay (Christopher) of Otis, Massachusetts, Dr. Whitney Washburn Sevey (Ben) of Milton, Vermont, and Scott Washburn of Alexandria, Virginia and one adored great grandchild, Roland. Win is predeceased by her two sisters; Dorothy MacDuff of Barrington, Rhode Island, Ilene Lewis of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, and her two brothers, Howard Barber and Robert Barber of East Providence, Rhode Island.
