William J. Schmitt

January 10, 1927 — January 8, 2016

William J. Schmitt, 88, of Wakefield, passed away January 8, 2016. Born in Union City, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Herman and Irma (Von Chermitsky) Schmitt. Mr. Schmitt was a WWII U.S Army Veteran. Mr. Schmitt was a Chemical Engineer for Olin Winchester in New Haven, CT and then for American Cyanmid Company before retiring. He was a CT state gallery champion, an avid outdoorsman and dog lover. He was a member of the second company Governors foot guard, VFW, and Amunusick Gun Club. He is survived by his children Paul S. Schmitt and his wife Mary Beth of Narragansett, Patricia Cuzino and her husband Joseph of Milford, CT, Carl T. Schmitt and his wife Kathy of Wakefield, and Marie F. Martin of Newburyport, MA; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be Wednesday January 13th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St, Wakefield. Burial with military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers donation can be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
