William A. Powers, 87, of Wakefield, passed away Thursday. He was the beloved husband of Diane D. Powers. They had just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on April 21st. Born in Guttenburg, Iowa, he was a son of the late James and Margaret (Oster) Powers. He moved to Peace Dale in 1940 and he proudly served in the United States Marine Corp from 1951-1954. He was wounded in action on Hill 104 on May 28, 1952, and received the Purple Heart. Mr. Powers was a clerk for the US Postal Service for 20 years, retiring in 1987. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Maureen LaFond and her husband Scott of North Attleboro, MA, Cynthia Sorlien and her husband John of Wakefield, and Karen Haitz and her husband James of Wakefield; eight grandchildren, Karly, Erica and Nicole LaFond, Emily, Erin and Zoe Sorlien, and James and Matthew Haitz; and three sisters, Elaine Doyle, Doreen Demers, and Ann Marie McKinnon. He was the brother of the late Margaret Clark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, Friday 5-7 pm.
