William Hunter (Lt. Col, US Army, Ret.), 91, of Wakefield, died Tuesday. He was the husband of Randalin (Voss) Hunter. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late William and Anne (Powell) Hunter. Mr. Hunter enlisted in the US Army Air Corp prior to World War II. After the war began, he served as a B-17 Bomber Pilot and was one of the first Pilots to complete 50 missions. He was originally stationed in England and provided air support for the Allied troops on the ground in Germany. He then became stationed in North Africa and took part in the invasions of Africa and Italy. After returning to the US, he was stationed in Long Beach, CA training pilots in instrument flying. Once the war ended he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command in Greenland and in 1950 he transferred to the reserves and retired from the California National Guard in 1977. He was a member of the Masons and enjoyed gardening, golf, travel, reading history and he and his wife enjoyed summers in Rhode Island, before returning to live here year round in 2002. Besides his wife he leaves a brother, Douglas P. Hunter of Warwick; a sister, Elizabeth H. Ward of Barrington and many cousins. Funeral and burial will be private in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery.
