Walter V. Harrington, Jr.

June 11, 1924 — June 26, 2018

Walter V. Harrington, Jr., 94, of Jerusalem, RI, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 26th. His beloved wife, Joan (Audette) Harrington, was by his side. As a young man, he joined the Navy at 18 and served honorably during World War II aboard the USS Belleau Wood, the USS Nevada, and the USS New Mexico, earning several medals, including the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with 9 stars. He was a Gunners Mate Third Class aboard the USS Belleau Wood when it was attacked by a Kamikaze. He could still vividly recall the events of that day more than seven decades later. Despite the horrors he witnessed at sea during the war, he would always find comfort by the water. Years later he met Joan, the love of his life, and they eventually settled in Jerusalem, where the spent many happy decades surrounded by friends, family, and the ocean. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Glen Harrington, Jo-Ann Harrington, Kevin Harrington, Jody Bishop, and Todd Harrington; two stepsons. Robbie Sherratt and Stephen Sherratt; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hope Hospice & Palliative Care, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02906.
