Virginia Shaw Mckinnon

April 1, 1914 — April 15, 2016

Virginia Shaw McKinnon, 102, formerly of Providence and Narragansett, passed away Friday, April 15th. She was the beloved wife of the late Francis X. McKinnon. Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Charles K. and Blanche (Randall) Shaw. Mrs. McKinnon was the oldest active member of the Dunes Club, a former member of the Wannamoisett County Club and Pt. Judith Country Club, and enjoyed playing golf until the age of 90. She had a Hole-in-One at Pinehurst Country Club, Pinehurst, NC in 1978. Mrs. McKinnon was a volunteer at South County Hospital / Medical Office Building until the age of 99, where she had volunteered for 13 years and had logged an amazing 2,760 hours of service. She was a devoted Boston Red Sox Fan, and credits her longevity to peanut butter sandwiches every day and Sweenor’s Dark Chocolate by the pound! She is survived by three children, Patricia Williams Dernavich (Rodney) of Wakefield, Virginia M. Dernavich (Paul) of Wilbraham, MA, and Frank McKinnon (Michelle) of West Warwick; six grandchildren, Drew Dernavich, Todd Williams, Jeff Dernavich, Cindy Hawkins, Mike McKinnon, and Dr. Kathryn Williams; and six great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Charles Knowlton Shaw, Jr. Visiting hours will be at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Saturday, April 23, 10-11:30 am, followed by a funeral service at 1 pm in the Historic Chapel at Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence. Family kindly requests to omit flowers and make memorial donations to the South County Hospital Auxiliary, 100 Kenyon Avenue, Wakefield, RI 02879. The family would like to thank Home Care Advantage, Hospice, and Brightview Senior Living for the care and compassion.
