Verna Octavia (Symonds) Green, 82 of South Kingstown, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 17th. She was born in Westerly, RI on February 8th, 1942, to Wilma E. Symonds and Rudolph Valentino Peckham. She was the beloved companion of Steven (Sonny) Mattcheck Sr.
Verna was a founding member of Jonnycake center of Peace Dale where she served as president of the board for over 25 years. Verna also worked at Ladd school for 37 years. She enjoyed Antiquing and thrifting, she was an avid collector and loved the trill of the hunt. She also loved gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Verna was a member of the Narragansett Indian Tribe and a non-enrolled member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe. She fought for her Symonds family enrollment and the fight continues. She was a member of D.A.R Narragansett, Cooke Gaspee chapter.
Verna is survived by her children, Holly (Noka) Sekator, Dawn Marie (Green) Weeden, Gordon Richard Green Jr, Sterling Green, and Samantha Green. Siblings, Gail, Charlene, Agnes, Charles, Curtis, Larry, Sandra, Debbie, Bruce, Gene Hall as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is pre-deceased by her daughters, Sheila Noka and Michelle (Noka) Jackson as well as her former husband's, Keneth R Noka and Gordon R Green.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, June 25th from 11-1 pm with a funeral service immediately following at 1 pm in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, RI 02879. Burial will follow in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston, RI.
