Thomas H. McCabe, 76, died Wednesday, July 9th at home, after a courageous 14 year battle with prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family in the home he designed and built. He was the beloved husband of Betty (Tychsen) McCabe to whom he was married for 50 years. Born in Yonkers, New York, he was a son of the late Hugh and Margaret (Paterson) McCabe. He was a graduate of Union College, earning post graduate degrees at Columbia University and the University of Wisconsin. He served his country as a Captain in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Mr. McCabe taught English Literature at the University of Rhode Island for 30 years, before retiring in 1994. In later years his days were filled with caring for the land on which he lived and enjoying his love of literature. Besides his wife he is survived by his four children and their spouses; Alison McCabe Bullen and Peter Bullen, Holly and Paul Manchester, Hugh and Valerie McCabe and Erica and Jan West. He adored his grandchildren; Jaclyn and Kyle Manchester, Paige and Patrick McCabe, and Madison West. A funeral service will be 9 AM Saturday in The Church of the Ascension, 370 Main Street, Wakefield. Burial with military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
