Thomas A. Hoxsie,64, passed away Sunday May, 9, 2021. A lifelong resident of Narragansett, Tom was the son of the late Samuel Bailey and Anne Nichols Hoxsie. He was the beloved husband of Doris Aschman and devoted father of Sarah and Benjamin Hoxsie Tom was a fixture of the Point Judith Fishing community, spending over 30 years tending floating fish traps, lobstering on his boat, the North Star, and raising Point Judith Salts oysters. Tom was unique in his ability to see forward and backwards in time. He saw the fishing industry in its entirety - as a business, a way of life and as a part of a whole. Tom was his own person and truly gifted at using his hands to make a life for himself and his family. He built many wooden boats and recently passed that knowledge down to his son who built his own wooden skiff for his senior project. Tom was an ardent outdoorsman, growing up in the woods and on the waters of Point Judith Pond. As a boy he spent the summers navigating his skiff around the pond and camping on the islands, rarely returning home. He was often conscripted to crew for his father and brother in sailing races at Point Judith Yacht Club. He was passionate about surfing and skiing, and taught at Yawgoo Valley for many years. He was a skilled marksman, and admired the beauty and simplicity of old black powder muskets. Tom was proud of his family’s deep roots in New England, and became a member of the Rhode Island Society of the Cincinnati. He was an avid reader and a deep thinker. He enjoyed long discussions over tea, and developed a wide circle of friends from all walks of life. He treasured these friendships and considered them to be his great fortune. Tom was predeceased by his brother Paul Garth Hoxsie, and is survived by his sisters, Nancy Hoxsie Mead of Narragansett, Christine Hoxsie Morris of Carolina, and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 14, 2021 at 11 am at the Riverside Cemetery, 169 High Street, Wakefield, RI, followed by a gathering at his sister Christine’s home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hope Hospice of RI (hopehealthco.org) or the Point Judith Fishermen’s Scholarship Fund, PO Box 386, Narragansett, RI 02882.
