Thomas A. Gullason, Ph.D., 85, of Kingston, died peacefully Wednesday July 15th at home with his loving wife of 54 years, Betty A. Gullason, at his side. Born in Watertown, MA he was the son of the late Sarkis and Rebecca Gullason. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and became a Professor of English at the University of Rhode Island. He retired as Professor Emeritus after 32 years of teaching. In addition to his teaching, he is recognized as an authority on Stephen Crane, he has had six books published , has had more than fifty scholarly articles published, he was a book reviewer for the "Boston Herald", and he was a member of the Editorial Committee of the journal "Studies in Short Fiction". In 1963, he was chosen as the Honors Day Lecturer at the University of Rhode Island. Mr. Gullason served in the Army during WW II and was honorably discharged at the rank of Technician 4th Grade Radio Operator. He served in the Philippines with the Assault Signal-Company 6 and he received the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon. Besides his wife he is survived by a son and his wife, Dr. Edward Thomas and Argina Gullason of Smithtown, Long Island, NY, two granddaughters, Jane and Nicole Gullason of Smithtown, Long Island, New York; and a brother-in-law Robert Bakalian of Philadelphia, PA. Visiting hours will be Thursday 10-11 AM at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, followed by a funeral service at 11 AM. Burial with military honors will be private. Please omit flowers and make memorial donations to a charity of one’s choice.
