The Honorable John M. Mcloughlin

The Honorable John M. McLoughlin, 73, of Saunderstown, died Wednesday. He was the beloved husband of Margaret (Hourigan) McLoughlin for 48 years. Born in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (McLaughlin) McLoughlin and grew up in Woonsocket. He graduated from Cranwell Preparatory School in Lenox, MA and from Boston College. He earned his JD degree from the University of Baltimore. Mr. McLoughlin was a District Court Judge for the State of Rhode Island from 1994 until his retirement in 2007. Prior to being a judge he was an Assistant Attorney General and practiced law privately. He was a past-president and board member of the Prout School and a docent for the Museum of Newport Irish History. He was previously an active member of South Kingstown Democratic Town Committee, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Sons of Irish Kings and the South Kingstown Lions Club. He is also survived by four daughters and their spouses, Mary Elizabeth (Richard, Jr.) Hess of Maryland, Tara (Glenn) Ross of Virginia, Heather (Edwin, Jr.) Kuffner of Pennsylvania, and Erin (Brendan) McCollam of Connecticut; twelve grandchildren; Rosalie and Lorelei Hess; Emily, Anna and Sarah Ross; Edwin III, Margaret and John Kuffner; and Hannah, Brigid, Madeline and Garrett McCollam. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Elizabeth McLoughlin Johnson of Watertown, Connecticut. The funeral will be 9 a.m. Wednesday, February 12th from the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. Visiting hours are Tuesday February 11th , 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to McCauley House Ministries, 622 Elmwood Avenue, Providence, RI 02907 or the Center for Ignatian Spirituality, Fairfield University, Fairfield, Connecticut 06824-5195.
