Susan D. McCarten (Hayes), 60, passed away Tuesday at her home in Narragansett, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Dennis J. McCarten. For more than two years, Sue faced the ravages of cancer and cancer treatment with dignity and grace. She was an inspiration to all who encountered her during her ordeal. Sue was a native of Cumberland and was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Dolores (Burke) Hayes. She was a graduate of Cumberland High School, Wellesley College and Suffolk University Law School, and had been a member of the Rhode Island and Massachusetts bars since 1978. Her successes as a student, attorney, and scrupulous regulator of financial institutions speak for themselves. The crowning glory of her life came as her role as mother and grandmother. Besides her husband she leaves behind her three children, Timothy McCarten and his wife Lisa Perez of Alexandria, Virginia, Elizabeth McCarten and her partner David Kinnecom of Narragansett and Katharine Hall and her husband Ryan Hall of Cumberland. Sue will also be sorely missed by the grandchildren who filled her home and lit her life over the past nine years: Olivia McCarten, Damian McCarten, and Riley Kinnecom, all children of Elizabeth. The funeral will be 8:45 am Monday from the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. Visiting Hours will be Sunday, 3 - 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to South County Community Action, "Head Start", 1935 Kingstown Road, South Kingstown, RI 02879, would be greatly appreciated.
