Dr. Surendra Singh Malik

Dr. Surendra Singh Malik passed away peacefully on Friday, January 13th at his home in Kingston, surrounded by family. He was 92. Suren was born in Kheri Patti, a village in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. He emigrated to the United States after completing a PhD in nuclear physics at Agra University in India (1960). He was a professor at the University of Ohio, then conducted research at the Fermi Institute (University of Chicago). He was then offered a teaching position at the University of Rhode Island where he taught undergraduate and graduate students for 56 years. During his time at URI, he served as Chairman of the Physics department for over a decade. Throughout his career he conducted research at Brookhaven National Laboratories on Long Island, and at the High-Flux Research Reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. His focus, as an experimental physicist, was the behavior of ultra-cold neutrons. He conducted and published research well into his 80’s. When inducting him into the University’s lifetime service society in 2019, URI said that he was instrumental in putting the University on the global ultra-cold neutron map. Dr. Malik is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Marlene Malik; sisters Rajesh Chaudhry and Niru Vora and their families; Veera Malik Walker and her children, Eleanor (Meghan Chaney), Griffin, and Miranda Walker; Neena Malik (Kristin Lindahl) and Liam Malik; Rajpal Malik (Tally Malik) and Amara, Leela, and Jona Malik. His family was always his first priority and his greatest love. He will be deeply missed by family and friends across the world and his Kingston community. A celebration of his life is planned for July 6th, 4:00 pm at The Towers, 35 Ocean Road, Narragansett.
