Stewart Cohen, Ph.D

Stewart Cohen, Ph. D, 74, of West Kingston, died unexpectedly Sunday. He was the beloved husband of Joan Valade-Cohen. Born in New York, NY, he was a son of the late Louis and Betty (Wood) Cohen. Dr. Cohen was a Professor of Human Development at the University of Rhode Island for over 30 years. He served as President of A.A.U.P. while he taught at the university. Recently he had been volunteering his time at the Westerly Senior Center teaching Civil War Studies and Spanish. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling and writing about the Civil War. Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, Joseph Cohen of Old Greenwich, CT, David Cohen of Wakefield, and Michelle Manning of Matunuck; and six grandchildren, Mason, Max, Sage, Jacob, Emma, and Caleb. He was the brother of the late Dennis Cohen. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 am Friday in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104.
