Steven Browning

August 19, 1966 — September 18, 2024

Steven Browning, 58, of Charlestown, RI passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024, after a courageous battle with pancreatic and liver cancer.

He was the beloved son of Clara Browning and the late Samuel Browning. Along with his mother, he leaves behind an older brother John, a younger sister Kathy and brother-in-law Matt Sherman.

Steven attended Chariho Regional High School's machinist program, graduating in 1984.

Following graduation, he worked as a machinist for Applied Plastics. In his 20's he decided to make a career change and was hired by the USPS of Wakefield, RI. He originally worked as a Postal Clerk before becoming a city carrier.

During his over 25 years with the post office, he delivered mail to virtually every home and business in Wakefield and Narragansett. Along his route, his warm smile and cheerful personality endeared him to everyone he met. Many of those people became his cherished friends.

He had a natural ability for almost any sport he tried. He played baseball and basketball with friends in his youth and was taught to bowl by his dad. For years, along with his brother he could be found at the lanes in Westerly and Wakefield playing on several winning leagues.

In 1998 he won a NEBA tournament at the East Providence Lanes, defeating 322 other entries. He bowled several 300 games over the years, one of which won him a 1989 Ford Mustang GT at another tournament.

On October 8th, 1998, he bowled an 869 series at Alley Katz in Westerly, a record that still stands today!

Steven was also an avid golfer who spent much of his free time on the links with his many friends. When he wasn't playing golf, he was watching it on TV in hopes of perfecting his game.

Blessed with good looks and an inquisitive nature, people found it easy to open up to him. Whether he was at the gym, at work or just at the grocery store, he charmed people wherever he went. He was grateful for the support of all of his friends over the past year to take the time to watch a football game, go for a hike or just to stop to have a cup of coffee with him.

He will be missed, most of all by his family with whom he had a close relationship. He was a devoted son and caring brother, especially to his older brother who he lived with and looked out for his whole life. He has left a hole in their hearts.

A Mass will be held at 2:00pm in St. James Chapel, 2079 Matunuck School House Rd, Charlestown, RI on September 28th, followed by a celebration of life at the Parish center.

In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to either St. Mary's Parish, Carolina, RI or Hope Health of Providence.
