Stephen Thomas Blessing Sr, 77, of Charlestown, RI and formerly of Fort Myers and Naples FL died peacefully on February 15, 2023 surrounded by his children. He was the son of the late George P. and Viola M. (Sutcliffe) Blessing. Steve was the longtime companion of Tracy Larsen of Florida and is predeceased by his wife, Cynthia S. Blessing.
Stephen was born and raised in Providence and is a graduate of LaSalle Academy, Bridgeton Academy and Roger Williams University. He was quick-witted and loved to tell a funny story and he had plenty to share. Stephen served in the National Guard and then proudly worked for the Providence Police Department for twenty-four years retiring as Detective Sergeant. During his “retirement” he was employed as an Equipment Manager for the NE Patriots and served as Director of Security for the Boston Red Sox at the spring training facilities in Florida for twenty-five years. Mr. Blessing received five World Championship Rings. PS-Please don’t rob the house during the funeral, they won’t be there, however, there are a bunch of blankets and a softball glove somewhere, so have at it!
Mr. Blessing was an avid fan of all Sports and played many himself, including Men’s softball well into his sixties. His finest sport “moment” was at Bridgeton where he had 28 points, and 19 rebounds against rival MCI. Not bad for a guy who averaged 6 pts a game! He was a beloved member of Pinecrest Country Club for over a decade. He also thoroughly enjoyed being on the sidelines, watching the “Blessings” at their sporting events, possibly more than playing himself.
Stephen loved his Goldens and named them after some of his favorite athletes, Yaz, Brodie and Jensen.
He is survived by his children, Sue-Ellen Blessing, Marianne Blessing Sabetta (Fiancé Steven S. Farias), Stephen T. Blessing Jr. and Carolyn M. Blessing, their mother Linda W. Drake. His loving grandchildren, Kelsey B. Murphy, Shayna Blessing Sabetta (Taylor Chavez), Thomas S. Sabetta and Jake C. Sabetta. His Godchildren, John P. Blessing and Chris F. Blessing. His Sister in-laws, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends. He adored them all.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 11 AM in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd, Kingston, RI. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Wakefield. Visitation will be private.
