Sr. Bernadette
Hughes

Sister Bernadette Hughes, C.P. of the Passion (Sr. Gerald), 88, died peacefully at St. Antoine's Residence on January 23, 2026.
Born in Dublin, Ireland to the late Peter and Brigid (Collins) Hughes, she joined the Sisters of the Cross and Passion in 1954. She was missioned to the United States in 1957 and professed her final vows in 1961.
Sister taught at both the Assumption School, in Providence RI. and St. Brigid School in CT.
She was on staff at Mount St. Joseph College in Wakefield, RI from 1969 to 1974.
Her journey then led her to become a Spiritual Director to many retreatants over the years, especially at Our Lady of Calvary Retreat House in CT, and in RI. Sr. Bernadette, was a woman of deep spirituality as evidenced by her willing commitment to journey with others.
In 1985 she was a founding member of our Jamaican Mission and there she led the retreat team for more than 30 years, returning to the states to assume one of her many leadership roles in the Province and Congregation. A deep devotion to Passion led her to live more fully, the vision statement of the Sisters of the Cross and Passion.
Sister is survived by her brother, Michael and sister, Mary Hogan, along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her sisters, Sr. Noeline, C.P. and Ann O'Dwyer.
Upon retirement, Sister became an active member of the St. Bernard Parish community, in North Kingstown. She shared her spiritual journey with many and participated in a number of parish activities. At these times, she was often found in the kitchen area, where she loved serving others. Along with her faithful friend, Sr. Una, they became a vital part of St Benard's Community.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday. January 30th at 11:00 am in St. Bernard Church, 275 Tower Hill Rd., North Kingstown, RI. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. Visiting hours will be held Friday, January 30th from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in St. Bernard Church.
