Sr. Augustine (Cathaleen) Mageau

Sr. Augustine Mageau, 93, (Cathaleen) of South Kingstown passed away Monday, December 19, 2022. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Bertha (Moran) Mageau.

Sister was a distinctive person firmly rooted in a rich heritage of South County people. She loved the history of her people and had so many stories from her childhood. She entered the Sisters of the Cross & Passion in1944 and was finally professed in 1947. She earned a Master’s degree in education and taught in schools staffed by the sisters in Rhode Island and Maryland and, most recently, Prout High School where she was inducted into the Prout Hall of Fame, class of 2021. She was also an excellent cook and staffed the sister’s retreat house for many years.

Sister Augustine is survived by her siblings Ruth Payte, Barbara Burdick, Karen Slaathaug, Patricia Raffin, and James M Mageau; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her siblings, she had a particularly close relationship with her nieces, Caroline Starnes (Jonathan), Jennifer Mageau, and nephew James M. Mageau II (Sonya) and their mother Linda C. Halliday. She is survived by her dear friend Janet Pires, who lovingly cared for her in her later years. She is predeceased by her brothers: Harold and John Mageau and sisters Rhoda Fisher and Gloria Bingley.

Visting hours will be held at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 from 2pm to 5pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 10am in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High St., Wakefield. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
