Shirley Anne (nee Whelan) McManus, 84, died April 13 in Westerly Nursing Home after a brief illness. Shirley was born in Providence, RI on July 5, 1928 the daughter of David Everett Whelan and Alice(Corrigan) Whelan. She attended Classical High School, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1945. She went on to Manhattanville College, earning a nursing degree in 1949, and practiced until her marriage to James E. McManus, M.D. In 1950. After living in East Norwich and Douglaston, NY they settled in Katonah, NY where they lived for 40 years, raising 7 children. An avid gardener and cook, she was also a tennis enthusiast, providing instruction to youngsters and serving as Captain of the Katonah Women's team for years. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters and served on the town's Democratic Committee. She was a voracious reader, loved crossword puzzles, and loved music, especially sacred music and folk music of heartland America. She and her husband relocated to Kingston RI in 2005, where they have been Parishioner’s at Christ the King Church. Shirley is survived by her husband, seven children Susan, James Jr., John, Thomas, Paul, David and Kevin, sixteen grandchildren and brothers David and Richard. A third brother, John, predeceased her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 8:30 AM in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Road, Kingston. Burial will be a 1:30 PM in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, New York. Donations can be made to Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd Kingston RI 02881 or to Catholic Charities.
