Samuel Bailey Hoxsie

March 8, 1925 — September 23, 2009

Samuel Bailey Hoxsie, 84, died September 23, 2009 at home. He was the husband of Anne (Nichols) Hoxsie. They were married for 62 years. He was born in West Palm Beach, FL, the son of the late Harry Bailey Hoxsie and Amy Barber (Allen) Hoxsie. He was a descendant of the Lodowick Hoxsie family of Sandwich, MA. His 6th great grandfather, John Hoxsie settled in Quonochontaug, Charlestown, RI in 1698. Mr. Hoxsie was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the 720th M.P. He was a past warden of St. John the Devine, Saunderstown and a past vestryman at St. Peter’s by the Sea, Narragansett. He was a commercial fisherman for 70 years. His dragger Elena, was fished for him from Galilee during his time in the service. When he returned home, he went lobstering for the rest of his life. Sam loved his gardens, books and sailing. He was a past Commodore of the Pt. Judith Yacht Club. He built his sailboats and work skiffs. He also built his home, the only house he and Anne ever lived in. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and his dogs were all well loved by him. Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, Nancy Hoxsie Mead of New York, NY, Christine Hoxsie Morris of Grantham, NH, Thomas Allen Hoxsie of Narragansett; a daughter-in-law Terrie Quinn of Narragansett; thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was the father of the late Paul Garth Hoxsie. A burial service will be held Friday, October 2 at 11:00 AM in St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal Church, 72 Central Street, Narragansett. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Wakefield, following the service. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Pt.
