Sally E Monahon

January 2, 1940 — November 5, 2024

Sally Evans Monahon, beloved mother, grandmother, and dedicated nurse, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024, at her cherished cottage in South Kingstown, with family by her side. Born on January 2, 1940, in Providence, Sally was welcomed as the city’s New Year’s baby by her parents, Louis G. and Frances Gallagher Evans. A true Bristolian at heart, Sally resided in Bristol, Rhode Island, and embodied the town’s spirit throughout her life.

After graduating from Colt Memorial High School in 1957, Sally pursued her passion for nursing at Rhode Island Hospital Nursing School. It was here she met her late husband, Bradford Wheeler Monahon. Together, they began their journey in Connecticut, where Sally worked at Yale New Haven Hospital before moving to Del Norte, Colorado. There, she served as a labor and delivery nurse at St. Joseph Hospital, where she also welcomed her two children into the world in the scenic San Luis Valley.

The pull of family and the ocean drew Sally and her family back to Rhode Island in 1967, where she dedicated herself to South County Hospital. For 28 years, she helped bring new lives into the world, transforming the Maternity floor into the Women’s Wing. Sally was an esteemed mentor to countless nurses, building lifelong friendships with her colleagues and patients alike. It was noted upon retirement that the docs all agreed they would not want to be in the trenches without Sally. After her formal retirement, her influence remained significant through her work with Dr. Bouchard, where her compassion and expertise continued to touch lives.

Sally leaves her two children, Neal B. Monahon (Rebecca) and Anne Monahon Hathaway (Drew). She is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Bradford William and Jillian Frances Hathaway, whom she adored and with whom she shared cherished memories. Sally is predeceased by her brother, John Evans, and is survived by her brother Robert Evans (Sally), as well as her treasured nephews and their families. She held a special place in her heart for Meg Hovanesian, whose joy and friendship enriched her life.

A member of the “Golden Girls,” Sally and the girls shared humor in cherished gatherings in Matunuck, The Elks Hall of Wakefield, and memorable trips, especially to The Cooked Goose in Westerly. She also spent countless days on the beaches of Siesta Key Florida. Those memories are shared by many. Her love of community was well-known, and her presence will be dearly missed.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Hope Hospice Rhode Island and all her caregivers for their compassionate support. In place of flowers, donations in Sally’s memory can be made to Hope Health Hospice, 1085 Main Street, Providence, RI 02904, or to the Planning Committee of The Bristol 4th of July Parade—an event dear to her heart.
