Russell T. Whaley

Russell T. Whaley, 79, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of Eleanor Adele (Harvey) Whaley. Born in Peace Dale, he was the son of the late Arthur F. and Helen S. (Holland) Whaley. Mr. Whaley was a Marine Draftsman for Electric Boat, Groton, CT, where he worked for 42 years before retiring to Tampa, FL, for the past 22 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1952 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Mr. Whaley was very proud of his term as Exalted Ruler of the Elks, South Kingstown Lodge #1899, between 1977 and ’78. Besides his devoted wife, he leaves sons Gary R. Whaley and his wife B.J., of West Kingston; Scott N. Whaley and his wife Sherril, of Narragansett; and daughter, Beth A. Cooke and her husband Jon, of West Kingston; brothers Joseph Whaley of North Carolina and Arthur Whaley of New York City; a sister, Carolyn Donahue of Florida; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Whaley was father of the late Thomas D. Whaley and brother of the late Robert and Clifton Whaley. The funeral will be Monday at 9:30 AM in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, and immediately following, burial with military honors at the R.I. Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are Sunday, between 2-4 PM at Avery-Storti. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the South Kingstown Elks Scholarship Fund; please make checks to “BPOE #1899” and mail to BPOE, 60 Belmont Ave., Wakefield, RI 02879.
