Rubenna Helme, 100, of Meadow Avenue, South Kingstown, died peacefully, Wednesday, December 31st, at South County Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Earl F. Helme. Rubenna was born on March 25, 1914 in Aiken, South Carolina, and was a daughter of the late Ruben and Amanda (Callahan) Craig. Mrs. Helme was a domestic worker for many years, retiring in 1976. She had worked at a pastry worker at the Wilcox Tavern in Charlestown and the Larchwood Inn in Wakefield. She was a member of the American Legion Downey Weaver Post Ladies Auxiliary in Charlestown, and a member and past president of Women’s Auxiliary VFW Post 916 in Wakefield. She is survived by a daughter Mary Lou Helme Stanton of Hopkinton; three grandchildren, Terry R. Stanton-Brown of South Kingstown, Marnell H. Cash of Mashpee, MA, and Earl C. Stanton of Hopkinton; six great grandchildren and thirteen great-great grandchildren; a brother, Jessie Craig of Aiken, South Carolina; and a sister, Ola Mae Hazard of Riverside, Georgia. She was the sister of the late Estes Craig, Lolice Craig, Henry Craig, Emma Coakley, Annie Wilson, and Cassie Greene; and grandmother of the late Philip L. Stanton. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 10 -11 am in the Wakefield Baptist Church, 236 Main Street, Wakefield, followed by a funeral service at 11 am in the church. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
