Rosalind N. Shumate, 98, originally of Wakefield, RI passed away Friday, December 23 at South Kingstown Nursing and Rehab Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Lawrence W. Shumate, Sr. Born in Wakefield on October 3, 1918, she was the daughter of the late C. Rodman Noka and Vivian S. (Deane) Noka. Mrs. Shumate worked at the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. during World War II and she was a secretary in the Mathematics Department at the University of Rhode Island for 20 years, retiring in 1980. A communicant of the Church of the Ascension in Wakefield, she was an active member of St. Mary’s ECW and Ascension Altar Guild. As an elder member of the Narragansett Indian Tribe, Rosalind belonged to the Silver Cloud Senior Group. Over the years, she was also involved with the Tomaquag Indian Memorial Museum in Exeter, RI. She leaves two sons, Lawrence W. Shumate, Jr. and his wife, Janet, of Seekonk, MA and Robert F. Shumate and his wife, Kris, of Wakefield; four grandsons, Aaron, Jason, Andrew, and Connor Shumate; and two great granddaughters, Brooke and Savannah. The funeral and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Tomaquag Indian Memorial Museum, 390A Summit Rd., Exeter, RI, 02822.
