Ronald Eugene Madison, 82, of Warwick, RI, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, at Kent County Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 5, 1943, he was the son of the late Roberta E. Madison and Eugene Madison. A lifelong Rhode Islander, Ronald graduated from South Kingstown High School in 1961 and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Criminal Justice from Roger Williams College.
From September 1965 to October 1967, Ronald proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career in law enforcement. In November 1971, he joined the Rhode Island State Police, where he served with honor and integrity for 23 years until his retirement in January 1995. At the time of his retirement, he was recognized as the first career African-American State Police officer—a trailblazer whose legacy of leadership, dedication, and courage left a lasting mark on the department and community.
Ronald will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his character and passions. He was admired for his resilience, strong leadership, and love of country. He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy (Jordan) Madison; his son, Garret Madison of Swansea, MA, and his wife, Cara (Mattera), along with their children, Garret Jr. and Mia of New Bedford, MA; his daughter, Karen Madison of Greenbelt, MD; and his brother, Roy Madison of Warwick, RI. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who will continue to honor his memory.
