Colonel (Retired) Ronald W. Dubois, a distinguished military leader and a valued
member of the University of Connecticut Athletic staff for four decades passed away peacefully
Thursday (Nov. 3, 2022) at South County Hospital in Wakefield, R.I., surrounded by his loving family. He
was 88 years old. Ron is survived by his most treasured wife of 63 years, Delia (Gagnon) Dubois, with
whom they built a loving family of 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Ron was born in Providence, RI in 1933. He was a graduate of La Salle Academy, Providence College, and
later earned his MBA at Sienna College. Ron Dubois (known as "The Colonel" to friends and colleagues)
enjoyed a 29-year military career that spanned the globe, rising to the rank of Colonel. He commanded
battalion-sized units, and although a career field artillery officer, he earned a combat infantry badge in
Vietnam, amongst other combat awards.
Colonel Dubois served two tours of duty each at the Pentagon and in the former West Germany. Ron
and Dee brought the family back to New England where, for his final military assignment Ron
administered the U.S. Army ROTC Program for the state of Connecticut.
Before retiring from the Army in 1982 he had already begun his lengthy second career that spanned four
decades in various key roles within the UConn Division of Athletics, including assistant men’s hockey
coach, followed by over 25 years in key administrative roles including Associate Director of Athletics.
Ron completed his service within UConn athletics serving for five years as the head coach of the men’s
golf program.
Ron was a devout Catholic with deep faith. He was an active member and daily communicant at St.
James Catholic Church in Charleston, where a mass in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday
November 12 th at 11:00 am. The service can also be viewed on-line via live stream at
twitch.tv/stmjparish There will also be a wake on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Avery-Storti Funeral
Home in Wakefield.
