Roderick A. J. Cavanagh

Roderick A. J. Cavanagh, 80, of Naples, FL formerly of East Greenwich and Wakefield, RI, passed away unexpectedly Friday, September 29th. He was born in Providence, RI to his loving parents, the late James and Eileen (MacMannus) Cavanagh. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Bonner) Cavanagh for 54 years. He is survived by his wife and children; Christine (Rich) and Scott (Elisabeth) and grandchildren; Alison, Tucker, and Cecily.

Rod graduated from Cranston High School, Providence College (1965), and Catholic University of America School of Law (1968). He began his legal career as an Associate at Keenan, Rice, Dolan Law Firm then spent the rest of his career as a Sole Practitioner in Wakefield, RI (1974-2020). He was admitted to the US Court of Appeals 1st Circuit in 1974 and US Tax Court in 1987. He was also a Special Education advocate serving as a RI Hearing Officer for 20 years and board member of The Greenwood School for dyslexic students.

Rod had many interests including spending his time with family and friends, golfing, skiing, and relaxing at the beach. His gift was conversation and he was always interested in hearing, reading, and sharing stories with everyone in his life.

Rod will be forever remembered by family and friends as a man of character and honor.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 6th from 1-3:30 pm with a funeral service to follow at 3:30 pm in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, RI. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Providence College in his name.
