ROBERT E. MOYNIHAN, DMD
December 21, 1932 – March 31, 2023
After a life well lived, Robert E. Moynihan, DMD, of Andover, MA died peacefully on Friday, March 31, 2023, with the love and support of his family. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he was the third son of Anna (Riordan) and Frederick Moynihan. He was predeceased by his brothers Francis and Frederick and is survived by his brother John of Swampscott, MA and his dear sister Eleanor of Cotuit, MA.
He savored a good party and was always the last to leave. He surrounded himself with those he loved and enjoyed all that life had to offer: music, books, travel, sports, theater, a cold pint and a well told story. A fierce adventurer, there was no place he’d rather be than pointing his skies downhill from high atop a mountain, trimming his sails far offshore the coast of New England or biking through the Austrian alps.
A graduate of Tufts University and Tufts Dental School, Bob served two years as an officer and surgical staff member on the 87th Medical Detachment at the United States Army Hospital in Nuremberg, Germany. Following that, he completed anesthesia training at Bellevue Hospital in New York City before endeavoring a decades-long practice in oral surgery in Lowell, MA and Nashua, NH with his friend and partner, the late Charlie McGowan, DMD.
True to his Catholic faith, Bob lived by the mantra to “live simply so that others may simply live” committing much of his resources to helping others. Whether co-founding a free dental clinic for the homeless population of Lawrence or traveling with his best friend, Dr. John Meade, on dental missions to Haiti, Bob held a strong sense of service to those less fortunate.
Father of 11, grandfather to 21, great grandfather to 5 and uncle to many, he is survived by his former wife Joanne (McCarthy) Moynihan of Kittery Pt., ME, his 6 daughters: Martha (Patrick Terrion) of West Hartford, CT; Mary (Alex Friend) of Burlington, VT; Beth of Andover, MA; Patricia of Amesbury, MA; Amy of Newport, RI; Joanna (Christopher Larson) of San Clemente, CA and 5 sons: Robert Jr. (Jennifer) of Falmouth, ME; Timothy (Janna Jeakins) of Seattle, WA; Michael (Floyd Miller) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; Matthew (MaryJane) of S. Kingstown, RI; and Daniel (Christine) of N. Kingstown, RI.
“Grampy..Dr. Bob” adored his grandchildren, many of them brave survivors of the “deetilly-deetilly” dance: Jessica, Andrew, Jill, Meghan, Ted, Emma, Eamon, Rory, Connor, Adisu, Sophie, Eve, Anna, Lehua, Aidan, Connor, Molly, Owen, Finn, Charlie and Adah. And great grandchildren: Mia, Cole, Haleigh, Ben and Ellie.
