Rn Mary K. Swanson

Mary K. Swanson, RN, 83, of Wakefield passed away Wednesday, June 18,2014 at South County Hospital, Wakefield. She was the wife of the late Harold Swanson. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Leo F. Smith Sr. and Mary F. (Hunt) Smith. Mary was a graduate of St. Xavier High School class of 1948 and RI Hospital School of Nursing class of 1952. After starting a family, Mary returned to nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse and the evening shift supervisor at South County Hospital where she worked for thirty five years. Mary was nationally certified in hospital infection control practices and was instrumental in launching South County Hospital's Infection and Quality Control program. After retirement Mary worked as a consultant in this field. Mary enjoyed painting, reading and spending time with family. One of her greatest joys in life was being "Nana" to her grand- and great grandchildren. She was the mother of Stephen H. Swanson of Exeter, Michael L. Swanson of Scituate and Patricia M. Andersen of Wakefield and the late Peter E. Swanson; sister of Leo F. Smith Jr. of Warwick, Eileen F. Smith of IN, Sheila J. Lynch of KY and the late Patricia L. Nolan. She also leaves nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 24, at 10:00 a.m. in Kateri Church, 84 Exeter Rd., Exeter. Burial will be private. Visiting hours Monday 4-7 p.m. in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield.
