Our wonderful old friend died on April 22, 2022, with loved ones at his bedside. He will be forever missed for the joy of life he carried and shared with us. Some of us called him Dick, others called him Richard, to many he was just Sanderson. We hiked with him, danced with him, pounded nails with him, smoked with him. He reminded us to gaze at the stars falling from heaven tonight, and to listen for the peepers. He loved to tramp the White Mountains, skate at Ell Pond, and he dug the clam flats of South County and he dug the Blues. He gave our children rain sticks from Maine, and holiday treats from Italy. Richard is survived by his cousin Whitney Carpenter, who lives in New Hampshire, and by his nieces in Italy: Giulia, Elisabetta, Federica, and Sara. Their mother, his beloved sister Kate, died last fall. He surprised us all by passing the 80th milestone. Cheri says “His voice on the phone never failed to lighten even the most difficult day. His wide range of interests, his rambling knowledge of so many things, his delight in nature, music and all things strange and quirky always brought amazement and magic to the lives of so many, even after a lifetime of knowing him. I hope the huge half moon brightened his way to a beautiful and joyful place. Rest in Peace, RS. Always in my heart”. Reid says “Dick was a unique and lovable character, who's life exemplified the American virtues of independence and tolerance. He was naturally inclined towards friendliness and openness to everyone. He will be greatly missed by his many friends.” When the days grow longer, we will gather to celebrate his life. Skate away, Richard.
