Richard R. Nooney

October 28, 1934 — September 3, 2023

Richard “Dick” Roberts Nooney passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 3, 2023, after a long battle with cancer.

Dick was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on October 28, 1934. He was the son of the late Arthur J. and Roma R. Nooney of Pawtucket and Cumberland, Rhode Island and the brother of the late Ruth Jane (Nooney) Thurley.

Dick attended Pawtucket schools, Brown University, and served in the US Airforce at Westover Air Base in Massachusetts in the critical skills program. He completed his studies at the University of Colorado-North. He married his lovely wife, Gail, in 1960. He worked for ITT Grinnell Corporation for 22 years and founded Nooney Controls Corporation with Gail in 1982.

He became a Christian at age 36 and served his Lord Jesus Christ the remainder of his life to the best of his ability. He experienced many blessings in his life, but most of all his marriage of 63 years.

He loved his son Jim Nooney, daughter Sharon (Nooney) Bettis and their spouses Linda Nooney and Chap Bettis. He was very proud of a smooth generational transfer of Nooney Controls to Jim. He was also very proud of his grandchildren: Kara Bettis Carvalho, Katelyn Nooney Goodenough, Chapman Bettis, Anna Nooney-Vinas, Rebekah Bettis, Nate Bettis, Elizabeth Nooney, and Grace Nooney were a constant source of joy in his life. He praised God that all of his family loves our Lord Jesus Christ. He also had two great-grandchildren, Carter James Goodenough and Hallie Grace Goodenough.

He joined Gideons International in 1981 and served for 42 years in this great ministry. He distributed thousands of Bibles around the US and the world, traveled to the Philippines, Peru and Spain on mission trips.

Dick and Gail lived in several places in the US and in recent years had their roots in Rhode Island, but spent 18 winters in Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island, South Carolina.

He was member of Ashley River Baptist Church in Charleston, SC for 18 years, very active for 43 years at Calvary Bible Church in Narragansett, RI and more recently a member of First Baptist Church in Narragansett, RI. He was a member of Point Judith Country Club for 51 years, where he enjoyed golf with his friends and son Jim.

Dick’s passing is a loss for the family but they know where he is – with his Lord and reunited with family and friends who have gone before him. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.
