Richard S. Hazard, 89, of South Kingstown, passed away on Tuesday, December 3rd. Born in South Kingstown, he was the son of the late Reginald and Pearl (Stanton) Hazard.
Richard was a proud Air Force veteran, played minor league baseball with Detroit Tigers, one of the first black referees/umpires in the state of RI. He later became an “assigner” of games…placing refs in different games, and ultimately Richard was inducted into the RI Sports Hall of Fame for his skills.
He is survived by his son Neal Hazard, his granddaughter, Kaitlyn Bailey, his former spouse, co-parent and friend, Vivian Texeira, his sisters, Caroline Perry, Evangeline Delves, Priscilla Spiver and his brother Lorenzo Hazard. He is pre-deceased by his siblings, Mason Hazard, Reginald Hazard, Robert Hazard, Blessing Bourne, and Rachel Santos.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 13th from 9:45-10:45 am with a service immediately following at 10:45 am in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, RI 02879. Burial will follow in Rhode Island Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 301 S. County Trail, Exeter 02822.
