Richard E. Curran, 87, of Pompano Beach, FL and Narragansett, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2019, surrounded by his sons John & Edward. Richard was born on November 6, 1932, to the late Edward A. Curran (U.S. Deputy Marshall) and V. Jennie (Parrillo) Curran. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan A. (Della Porta) Curran for 52 years. Richard graduated from LaSalle Academy and Providence College, earned a Masters degree from N.Y.U and M.S.U., and then was employed by the Providence School Department for over 35 years. He started his career as a teacher at Gilbert Stuart School then in 1960 the Federal Government created the Title One Program and our dad was selected to go to Michigan State University for a Masters Degree for the Title One Program. There was a picture and article in the Providence Journal with my mom and dad, four brothers and sister in the back of a station wagon to drive to Michigan. Our dad retired from Providence Schools after over 35 years. Our dad impacted the lives of countless students in his long distinguished career as an educator, as a teacher, mentor, guidance counsler, director of special education and assistant superintendent of schools. Our dad loved being recognized on Scarboro Beach by former students who would hug him and thank him for his guidance. "Dick" was known at Scarboro sitting on his front porch enjoying the sun. During the summer he was a communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church and also a Eucharistic Minister and he was a Grand Knight of the Edgewood Council of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his children, John M., Richard P., Mel and Edward P. Curran. "Pops" is survived and will be forever missed by nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His great pleasure was being visited by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad was pre-deceased by his wife, Joan, his sons, David C. (2016) and Robert T. (2012). His heart was broken three times in his life by these loses. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December, 12, 2019, 9-10 am in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Pt. Judith Rd., Narragansett. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to LaSalle Academy, 612 Academy Ave., Providence, RI 02908.
