Regina Russell Goodwin, 88, died peacefully Sunday at her beloved Matunuck home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Francis X. Goodwin, Sr. Born in Providence into a proud Irish family, the daughter of the late Henry C. and Helen T. (Grady) Russell. She was a graduate of Holy Name School and St. Xavier Academy in Providence. She received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Rhode Island College of Education in 1950. She took a hiatus from her teaching career in Providence to raise her children. When they reached school age, she returned to her passion for teaching with the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT for the next 25 years. Regina began spending summers in Matunuck in 1933. As a devout Catholic, she became a faithful communicant of St. Romuald Chapel. Upon her retirement in 1995, she moved to Matunuck full time. More than anything, Regina loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her life in Matunuck. She was an avid reader and could often be found doing crossword puzzles on her front porch, where she also entertained her many family, friends and neighbors for over 80 years. She is survived by two daughters Mary and her husband Ronald Schumitz, and Catherine Goodwin, three sons; Francis “Bud” Goodwin, John Goodwin and his wife Betty-Lou, and Thomas Goodwin; a sister Helen Henley; seven grandchildren; Nicolas Goodwin and wife Melanie, Ryan Goodwin, Colin Goodwin and wife Stephanie, Michael Schumitz and wife Inga, Kathleen Shapiro and husband Andrew, Sarah Goodwin and Brian Goodwin; five great-grandchildren; Baylin, Jackson, Dylan and Julian Goodwin and Caleb Schumitz. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 10:00 am in St. Romuald’s Chapel, 61 Atlantic Ave, Matunuck, RI, with a burial to follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 5-8pm in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St, Wakefield, RI, 02879. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to Hope Hospice & Palliative Care of Rhode Island, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI, 02904.
