Dr. R. Michael Hendry of Atlanta, formerly of Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco and New York, died peacefully at home on December 7. Born in Weymouth, MA, he was the son of the late William J Hendry, Jr. and Louise (Brunelle) Hendry. He is survived by his children Graham and Gina (Pierik) Hendry of San Francisco and his brother Dr. William J. Hendry III of Wichita, KS. Michael was a graduate of Weymouth High School class of 1972. He received a Bachelor of Science from Northeastern University in 1976. He studied Microbiology and received a Doctorate of Science from Harvard School of Public Health in 1981. Michael was a talented scientist and a devoted teacher. From 1980 to 1985, he was a Virology Instructor and Research Associate at Harvard Medical School and Boston Childrens Hospital. In 1985 he became a Senior Staff Fellow at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Bethesda, MD. In 1989 he continued his Public Health career as Chief of Respiratory, AIDS and Support Section at the California Department of Health Services, Berkeley, CA. Concurrently, Michael served as Director, Collaborating Influenza Center, World Health Organization. In 2001, he accepted a position as Director, Vaccine Discovery for Wyeth Laboratories, Pearl River, NY. Finally, in 2008, he returned to the public sector as Chief, HIV Laboratory Branch at the US Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, GA. Michael enjoyed music throughout his life, and had an extensive collection of classical recordings. He developed a love of surfing and skiing while growing up in New England. He loved to travel and his Public Health work took him all over the world. He was a devoted father, husband and provider. Michael will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his wit, and his warmth. He was loved by numerous family members, friends, colleagues and students. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Friday April 27th at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale.
