Phyllis J. Horton, 84, of Wakefield, died Friday. She was the wife of the late Frederick W. Horton. Born in Wakefield, she was a daughter of the late Raymond T. and Esther M. (Gavitt) Chappell. Mrs. Horton had a unique ability to connect with children and enjoyed her many years as a Nursery School Teacher at the Ginger Bread House Nursery School in Wakefield. She enjoyed painting and was a well- known local artist whose paintings appeared in many local art shows and throughout New England. She was a member of the South County Jr. Women’s Club and was a volunteer at South County Hospital for many years. She is survived by a son, Steven F. Horton of Wakefield; a daughter Lori A. Armentano of North Granby, CT; eight grandchildren, Andrea Horton Long of Atlanta, GA, Greg Horton of Narragansett, Eric Horton of Narragansett, Tahlia Hadley of Albany, NY, Daniel Armentano of Durango, CO, David Armentano of North Granby, CT, Bradley Gray of Wakefield, and Michael Gray of Wakefield; and two great-grandchildren, Benjamin Hadley and Jonathan Hadley of Albany, NY. She was the mother of the late Kristi Gray Froggatt and sister of the late Raymond T. Chappell, Donald Chappell and Katherine Damon. A funeral service will be held at 10 am Monday in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. Burial will follow in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston. Visiting hours are Sunday 2-4 pm.
