Phyllis Kay Bloom

Phyllis Kay Bloom, 80 of Wakefield, RI and formerly of Portsmouth, RI, died Monday August 15, 2022, at Brookdale, South Bay in Wakefield, RI, after a prolonged illness. Born December 14, 1941 in Nepoleon, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Paul Curtis and Pauline Lydia Williams. She is survived by her spouse of 52 years, John Lester Bloom Sr. They traveled extensively through her husband’s Naval career before settling in Portsmouth RI in 1978. A 1964 graduate of Drury College, Springfield, MO with a degree in Elementary Education, she taught at various public schools over the years. Phyllis was grounded by her Christian faith and enjoyed playing piano, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Newport, RI where she served as a deacon and church librarian for many years. She was also involved in various church programs including Woman’s Bible Study, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was very active in the community and a volunteer at Lucy’s Health, helping women and children in crisis. Besides her spouse she leaves a sister, Peggy Williams of Tulsa, OK, two children, Laura Wallace (the late J. Gordon Wallace) of Wakefield, RI, Gregory Bloom and his wife Jennifer of Portsmouth, RI, 2 stepchildren, John Bloom, Jr and his wife Del of Plainfield, IN, Cathrene Gutshall and her husband Kevin of Falls City, NE and 10 grandchildren, Abigail Bloom, Sarah Bloom, Jacob Bloom, Molly Bloom, Sage Wallace, Liam Wallace, Alex Bragg, Zechariah Bragg, Andrea Bloom (Nathan) and Joshua Bloom (Crystal). The funeral and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association of RI or Hope Health Hospice
