Janet H. Younng, Ph. D., 81, of Newport, died Monday. She was the wife of the late Michael M. Younng. Born in Boston, MA, she was a daughter of the late Cecil C.C. and Grace E. (Petersen) Humphreys. She was a graduate of Brookline High School and attended the University of New Hampshire, where her grandson Michael graduated from in 2009. Dr. Younng and her husband married on September 10, 1951 and moved to New York City where she briefly pursued an acting career. Mrs. Younng raised her family and pursued her Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology at Hofstra University on Long Island, NY. Her career as a clinical psychologist and school administrator took her from Long Island, NY to Chappaqua, NY and to Westerly RI and Chariho School District in RI. She lived many years at East Beach, Charlestown, RI at her beloved ocean view home, and then moved to Newport, RI for more than a decade. Janet was a long-time supporter of human rights, women’s rights and a champion for the underdog. She was witty, creative and, along with her late husband Mike, a community activist and supporter of the arts. Janet was a fierce advocate for her family and friends. Janet’s family wish to thank the staff of the Scallop Shell Nursing Center in Peace Dale, RI for their compassionate care during her last couple of years. She is survived by her daughter Claudia Mullane and her husband Dan of Killingworth, CT; her son David Younng of Killingworth, CT; and three grandchildren, Jeremiah Mullane and his wife Margo of Boston, Michael Mullane and Grace Mullane, who is following in her Nana’s footsteps, pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology in Boston. Funeral services are private.
