Peter P Horoschak was born into this world on June 22, 1940, in the year of the dragon. Throughout his 86 years, he led a life marked by honorable service in the military, innovative and inclusive leadership in public schools, and devotion to his family and friends. He used his dragon fire as a light to support and delight others until his last breath on September 1, 2026. Peter was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, to Paul Horoschak and Anna Revak, coal miners' children who completed eighth grade and later moved west to Denver, Colorado, for a better life. Their middle child, Peter, would distinguish himself at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Boston University, and Harvard University, where he earned a doctorate in educational leadership.

Peter served in the 11th Armored Calvary in Vietnam after which he was awarded the Bronze Star. His service in Vietnam impacted him to pursue a career in education to make sure all young people were provided with opportunities to lead their best lives. He began his post-military career in the Boston Public Schools during desegregation and then worked for the state of Connecticut before enjoying a more than 30 year career as a superintendent in school systems from Poughkeepsie and Pittsford, NY, Shaker Heights, OH, Stanford, CT, Albuquerque, NM, South Orange-Maplewood, NJ, to Warwick, RI. His final educational role was as an adjunct professor at Johnson and Wales University where he taught leadership and ethics. Always, Peter was recognized by his colleagues and community for his unique ability to listen, to support, and to bring out the best in everyone.

Peter was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Sandra and Paula. He leaves behind his wife, Anna, and their children; Suzanne Laffely and her children Isaac, Elizabeth, Forrest, and Anna; Katherine Horoschak and her husband, James Flattery; Christopher Horoschak and his wife Heather and their children Braxton and Gabriella; and Michael Horoschak and his son Jordan. In addition, Peter leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and David Kurowski, and their children and grandchildren who affectionately knew him as "Uncle Pete".

Peter's lasting legacy is the family he leaves behind. He was the husband who provided for and supported his family and everyday made time for a meal with Anna. He was the father who read books in character's voices. He was the grandfather who told stories and played trains on the floor. He loved reading history books, watching the Red Sox on TV, doting on his dog, and cheering on his beloved Army football team. If you were lucky enough to know Peter, you know he loved to make people laugh and he loved life and held on as long as he could to have more time with the people he loved. He will be dearly missed and will surely be welcomed into heaven by a pack of dogs (Honey, Wilbur, Bo, Ling, and Max), who will be wagging their tails and covering him with kisses.

The Horoschaks are grateful for the loving care Peter received from his team at Advinia Care Newport and Harmony Hospice. We are forever thankful for his CNAs, in particular, who treated him like family.

Calling hours for Peter will be held on Friday, October 2nd, 2026 from 9 AM to 11 AM in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. A funeral home service will follow at 11 AM in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
