Paula (Davey) Papshise of Peace Dale House, died Friday, September 5, 2014, in Westerly. Paula had fought stubbornly against melanoma for over a year and was her usual cheerful, active self until the disease began to win two weeks ago. Paula was an outstanding poet. Her thoughtful poems questioned life and her reasons for being. Paula was born in Providence, RI, April 28, 1941, the daughter of Peter and Agnes (Lynch) Davey. She attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and St. Patrick High School in Providence and Salve Regina College. Paula was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Papshise and her brother, Peter P. Davey. She is survived by her brothers Thomas V. Davey (Sandra) of California, Francis J. Davey (Edilma) of Florida and one sister, Susan Garten (Dick) of West Virginia; a sister-in-law, Suzanne Davey of Canada; as well as a nephew and several nieces. She also leaves, among friends, the elderly creative writers’ lunch group who affectionately called her “the kid.” The group will never be the same without Paula’s optimism, wit and insight. Visiting hours will be held at Avery Storti Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Road, Kingston. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter at noon. For guest book and condolences, averystortifuneralhome.com.
