Obituary

Paul D. "Russ" Russell passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2026. Born in West Warwick, R.I., he was the son of the late J. Eddie and Dora (Joubert) Russell. He was the husband of the late Jean (Yost) Russell for 65 years.

Paul was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island. For many years he was an active member of the South Kingstown Police Reserves, the South County Ambulance Corps, and the South County Rod and Gun Club.

Until his retirement, he was the owner of Newport Tire which he and Jean purchased in 1977. He served on various boards and committees including the Rhode Island Better Business Bureau, the Newport Armed Services YMCA, and the Naval Restoration Advisory Board. He was also a member of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, the Newport Museum of Yachting, and the Newport Yacht Club, and was a Past Commodore of the Goat Island Yacht Club. He was an avid boater and held a U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton captain's license. A highlight of his boating adventures was the five summers he sailed as a member of the crew aboard the 12-meter Rhode Island State Yacht "Courageous."

Paul enjoyed sharing boating stories with other boaters on "G" dock at Goat Island Marina, where he and Jean were blessed to live for 31 summers aboard their calm cruiser the "Anne K" which he called their "floating condo." He was an accomplished chef and those downwind of the "Anne K' often commented on the wonderful aromas emanating from his galley.

He is survived by his daughter, Anne Cabral of Wakefield, R.I., his son, Stephen (Ellen) of West Kingston, R.I., grandchildren, Jennifer Bednarski, Christopher (Gwyneth) Russell, Alexandra and Payton Russell, Emmali, Zachary and Max Cabral, and six great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife Jean, and sons Brian and Carl.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 6th from 4-6 pm in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, RI. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 7th at 10 am in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High St., Wakefield, RI. Burial will follow in St. Francis cemetery, George Schaeffer St., Peace Dale, RI.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Brian P. Russell Pharmacy Endowment, c/o URI Foundation, 79 Upper College Road Kingston, RI 02881.
