Paul Gerald
MacLean
May 17, 1943 – April 8, 2026
Paul Gerald MacLean, 82, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026. Predeceased by his parents, Donald and Agnes, he is survived by his wife, Diane, and his children Neil (Melanie) and Kate (Tim). Paul is also remembered by his grandchildren Miles, Noah, and Ellison, as well as his brothers, Robert and Donald.
Born on May 17, 1943, Paul grew up in the Federal Hill area of Providence, but especially enjoyed summers spent at the family beach house in Charlestown.
After graduating from Providence College in 1965 with a degree in Political Science, Paul, a lifelong enthusiast of history and maps, joined the Air Force and rose to the rank of Captain. His service took him from training in Texas to a base in North Dakota and finally the South Korean island of Jeju.
Paul then pursued a career in law, graduating from Suffolk University in 1973. He practiced as an attorney at the Bernard Gladstone law firm, after which he served as the City Solicitor of Central Falls for several years. Following in the footsteps of his mother, he made a career change into nursing at age 40, and graduated from URI with a BSN in 1988. He dedicated the latter part of his professional life to psychiatric and community nursing, working at the Providence VA Medical Center, St. Joseph's Hospital, South County VNA and the Newport County Community Mental Health Association. He also took pride in owning and carefully maintaining residential real estate.
Most of all, Paul put his heart into his role as a husband to Diane and as a father to Neil and Kate, taking time for the important moments, big and small - a good dinner, sporting events, and favorite vacation spots.
Upon retirement, he enjoyed the quiet of Narragansett, cherishing afternoons at the beach, dining out with Diane at their favorite places, and traveling to spend time with his children and grandsons who all loved trying to beat their "Papa" at chess.
Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 9-1030AM in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI 02879 with A Mass of Christian Burial to immediate follow at 11AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield, RI 02879. Burial is private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library Children's Room, 25 Pier Market Pl, Narragansett, RI 02882 in honor of Paul MacLean.
