Paul F. Helweg, Jr. 63, of North Kingstown, died unexpectedly Thursday. He was the husband of Linda Mathewson and the late Katherine (Fahey) Helweg. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he was a son of the late Paul F., Sr. and Mary Louise (Washburn) Helweg. Mr. Helweg was employed by the Johnson & Higgins Insurance Agency in Hartford, CT for many years. After retiring, he was active with the Army ROTC Alumni Association at URI and he helped coach the lacrosse teams at URI and South Kingstown High School. He served honorably in the US Army and the Army Reserves. In his spare time he enjoyed sailing, hiking, and rooting for the Green Bay Packers and LA Dodgers. Besides his wife he is survived by two children, Courtney Jamroga and her husband John of Waterford, CT and Todd Helweg and his wife Jessica of Wethersfield, CT; two step-children, Brooks Mathewson and his wife Sarah of Newton, MA and Karen Mathewson-Adler and her husband Dan of Brooklyn, NY, six grandchildren, Sophie, Katie, Noah, Ella, Jack, and Jackie; three sisters, Rosemary Krause and Elizabeth Helweg, both of Florida, and Joanne Amarante of Guilford, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM Monday at Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Road, Kingston. Burial with military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, Sunday, 3-6 PM. In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Army ROTC Program at URI, checks payable to “URI ROTC Cadet Fund”, Keaney Gymnasium, Kingston, RI 02881.
