Oliver Cottrell

September 8, 1929 — June 4, 2016

Oliver Cottrell, 86, of West Kingston, passed away Saturday at home. He was the beloved husband of the late June (Tappan) Cottrell. Born in South Kingstown, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Smith) Cottrell. Mr. Cottrell was the owner and operator of the Cottrell Homestead in West Kingston. He was a member of the Rhode Island State Grange, the Washington County Pomona, the Rhode Island Ayrshire Club, the Agricultural Counsel, where he served as past –president, and a 70 year plus member of the Richmond Grange. Mr. Cottrell was an original board member of the Washington County Fair and he served as the Livestock Co-Chair with his late wife for many years. He was a multiple green pastures Winner, won the Master Breeders award in 2004 from the Ayrshire Breeders Association. He also was a 4-H member, leader, and mentor. He is survived by four children, Julie Brodeur (Paul) of West Kingston, Gary Cottrell (Mary) of Wakefield, Glen Cottrell of West Kingston, and Matthew Cottrell of West Kingston; four grandchildren. Caleb Cottrell, Peter Brodeur, Sarah Kelly, and Jessica Cottrell; three great-grandsons, Oliver Cottrell, Ryan Kelly, and Rocco Kelly., two sisters, Patricia Salisbury of Wakefield, and Gertrude Hawksley of Wakefield; and a brother, Richard Cottrell of Richmond A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Thursday in the Kingston Congregational Church, 2610 Kingstown Road, Kingston. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rhode Island 4-H Club Foundation, Inc. PO Box 1925, Kingston, RI 02881.
