Nellie Christopher, 95, of Wakefield, died Thursday June 18, 2009 at Scallop Shell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She married her late husband Albert B. Christopher Sr. when she was twenty-two and had much happiness over their 65 years of marriage. Born in Manchester England, to Perry and Lily (Higginson) Miller, she came to the United States when she was twelve as her mother had relatives here and she attended school in Pawtucket. Nellie always liked to have fun dancing and playing the piano. She enjoyed cooking and traveling to many places, including landing on a glacier in a small six-passenger plane. She was very adventurous and also went on a small boat in New Foundland delivering mail to many small fishing villages. Nellie and her husband wintered in St. Petesburg, FL where she volunteered at St. Anthony’s Hospital and logged over 3000 hours. She leaves a son, Albert Christopher Jr. of West Kingston, daughters, Cheryl Whitcher of Narragansett, Lynne Taylor-Valcourt of Murrells Inlet, SC and Sandra Groover of St. Petersburg, FL; eleven grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11:00 AM in the Wakefield Baptist Church, 236 Main St., Wakefield. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Scallop Shell Staff Appreciation Fund, 981 Kingstown Rd., Peace Dale, RI 02879.
