Nancy Carpenter French Schock, 90, passed August 9th at South Kingstown(RI) Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She leaves husband Charles Schock of Wakefield, R.I. daughters Penelope Simpson and Janet Kraus (Doug) of Kingston, R.I. and Patricia Rosenthal (Donald) of Evergreen, Colorado and Falls Church, Virginia and sons David (Shirley) of Wakefield, RI and Thomas of Cranston, R.I. nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She graduated in 1943 from Rhode Island State College (now URI). In 1943 she married Howard French who joined the Air Force, WWII, and was shot down over Japan. Nancy bundled up daughter Penny and headed from Houston to New York where she earned her Masters Degree from Columbia. She taught women’s health and physical education at the Universities of Cincinnati and Kentucky and was head of the Women’s Health and Physical Education Department at URI 1948 -1950. She married Charles Schock in 1950 and lived in Lexington, Mass. for over 55 years. In 1991 she was inducted into the URI Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2002 received the Honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from URI for her contributions to the disabled and to the University. She was a leader in helping the disabled. She worked with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Boston Center for Independent Living and was founder and president of the Information Center for Individuals with Disabilities. A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Church in Lexington, Mass. October 6th at 11am. Contributions in her memory may be sent to MDA or BCIL.
