Mildred R. “Millie” (Smith) Sherman, 85, of Wakefield, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on February 3, 2015. She was the beloved wife of Gardner L. Sherman for 60 years. Born in Providence on January 28, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Edna (Stillman) Smith. Millie was a talented seamstress, crafter, and apple pie maker. She was an avid reader, enjoyed bible study group, and was a member of the Perryville Grange for more than 50 years. Millie will be remembered for her quick smile and she will be missed by all who knew her. Besides her husband, she is survived by six daughters, Sharon Gretzula and her husband John, Bethany Curtis and her husband Andrew, Elizabeth “Betty” Rousseau and her husband Thomas, Marilyn Sherman, Emily Gioielli and her husband Stephen, and Mildred “Meme” Lathrop and her husband James; twelve grandchildren, Greg, Drew, Tammi, David, Seth, Niki, Thomas, Aaron, Anna, Emily Elena, Stephanie, and Sarah; as well as six great-grandchildren, Curtis, Cody, Paige, Kayla, Will, and Riley; and two sisters, Roberta Baker and Carolyn Gaudreau. She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Howard. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. Visiting hours are Thursday 4-7 p.m. Millie fought a long battle and was greatly helped by her VNS staff nurses, especially Deb, Barbara, and Sarah.
