Michael Cooney

Michael Cooney, 81, passed away on May 21, 2014. He was husband of Peggy (Webster) Cooney for sixty years. Born in Providence he was the son of the late Hon. John P. Cooney and Margaret M. (Fitzgerald) Cooney. Mike graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1950, The College of the Holy Cross in 1954, and received his M.B.A. from Boston College in 1961, graduating at the top of his class. He was inducted into the Holy Cross Varsity Club, Hall of Fame for football and track in 2001. Besides his wife he leaves two sons Michael of Providence, Kevin of N. Kingstown, two daughters, Margaret Kearns of California and Elizabeth Walters of Virginia, thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, two brothers Terence of Great Barrington, James of West Kingston, three sisters Kathleen Puchalla of Snug Harbor, Agnes Chretian of Providence and Anne Cooney of Matunuck. He was the father of the late Ellen McLaughlin, and brother of the late John, Robert, Patrick, Margaret, Clara, and Edward Cooney. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, May 28th at 10:00 AM at St. Romuld Chapel Atlantic Avenue Matunuck (So. Kinstown, RI). Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery. Visiting hours 4:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday, May 27th at Avery Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the John P. Cooney Memorial Award, The College of the Holy Cross, 1 College Street, Worcester, MA 01610 will be appreciated.
