Michael W. Carty

November 18, 1927 — November 13, 2015

Michael W. Carty, 87, of Bonnet Shores, died quietly in his sleep surrounded by family Friday night, November 13, 2015. He was beloved husband to the late Marguerite Rose Dolan Carty, cherished father, grandfather, uncle and good friend to so many. Born in Providence, RI he was the eldest of seven to the late Howard and Julia “Alice” Carty. At a young age, he learned the value of family and hard work spending summers working on his grandparents Mike and Cassie’s farm in New Brunswick, Canada. He began his career in the US Marines during WW II, a proud label he would cherish for the rest of his life. His careers spanned many disciplines over his 60 years of employment. He became an electrician in 1949, an active member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 99. In the 70’s, he owned his own electrical contracting business and taught electric theory at the Local’s school for continuing education while he moved his family from the city, Cranston, to his shangri la, Bonnet Shores. He worked as International Project Manager for Combustion Engineers’ power generation endeavors across the US and Caribbean. Licensed in all New England states until 2007, he worked as project manager on many construction/electrical projects including Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island and Miriam Hospital, Armory of Mounted Commands to name a few. Mike was a faithful communicant of St Thomas More Catholic Church and subsequently St Veronica’s Chapel of Narragansett. He was 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and 32nd Degree Mason. Michael had many aliases, Mike, Walter, Walt, Waldigo, Big Walt, Pop, Moosehorn Mike and Papa. Whether deploying to Little Beach to help a person save their boat in a hurricane, repairing a roof for a family during a blizzard, or providing a warm meal and an open door to any one of his many friends or family. No matter what he was called, he was a man larger than life, always committed to helping others overcome adversity. Mike’s family always came first. His wife and children could always be seen by his side on a job, skiing in NH or manning a grill at the Carty Party. His love of life was contagious to all he encountered. In addition to his second wife, Mary Doyle Carty, he leaves his children, LTC (R) Stephen M. Carty and his family Julia, Cullen and Cailey Carty, Martin P. Carty and wife Kim and children Mason and Avery, David J. Carty and wife Meaghan, children Logan and Addison, Mary McQuarrie and husband Rick, children Marin, Maeve, and Dolan, and his sister Margaret McLaughlin.
